The Deep North is not showing up in my world
Why the Deep North generates in some worlds and not others, how to tell which you have, and the three ways forward when the north you want is already explored.
The short version
Valheim generates a zone the first time a player comes within about 500 metres and never generates it again. If your crew already sailed through the far north, that ground is locked as old placeholder snow. Sail to unexplored northern ground instead, start a new world, or reset those zones with a world-editing mod.
You updated the server, sailed to the top of the map, and found the same flat snow that was there before. Nothing broke. The world did what Valheim worlds have always done.
#Zones are rolled once
Valheim generates a zone the first time a player comes within about 500 metres of it, writes the result into the world file, and never touches it again. Every update since launch has worked this way, and it is why the Mistlands and the Ashlands both arrived with the same question attached.
New content lands in ground nobody has been near. Ground somebody has been near keeps whatever it had at the time.
#Working out which you have
Open the map. The drawn area is where your group has been, and everything drawn is fixed.
Most crews are fine. The old far north was placeholder terrain with nothing in it to visit, so hardly anyone spent time up there. If your map is blank above the Mountains, sail north and the Deep North generates as you approach it.
If the top of the map is filled in, that ground is settled. The rest of this page is your options.
#Option one: sail further
Valheim worlds are large and the Deep North runs the full width of the northern edge. A single exploratory voyage years ago drew a narrow corridor, not the whole band. Head for the north-east or north-west corners instead of retracing the route you already took, and you will find unrolled ground long before you run out of map.
This is the option most groups should take. It costs a sailing trip and keeps everything you have built.
#Option two: a new world
Iron Gate recommend a fresh world for the full 1.0 experience, and if your northern edge is comprehensively explored they have a point. A new seed gives you the biome as designed, in progression order, with the new dungeons and locations distributed properly.
Characters carry between worlds, so nobody loses their skills to do this. What you leave behind is the base.
#Option three: reset the zones
Upgrade World has a zones_reset command that marks zones ungenerated, so the game rolls them again the next time somebody visits. There is also a redistribute step, without which you get the same locations back in the same places.
Three warnings before you reach for it. It destroys everything inside the zones you reset, buildings and dropped items included, so keep it well away from anywhere you have built. It is a mod, so it needs a version compatible with the build you are running, which after a major patch means waiting. And take a backup first, because a mistyped zone range on a world you care about is not recoverable any other way.
#What does not work
- Deleting the
.fwlfile. That is the world metadata and seed, and removing it does not regenerate terrain. - Reinstalling the server or the game. The world file is the world, and it is unchanged by either.
- Creating a new world with the same name and seed. You get a fresh world, not your world with new terrain.
- Waiting for a patch. Iron Gate have never retro-generated explored ground and have given no indication that 1.0 is different.

#Frequently asked questions
Why is the Deep North missing from my Valheim world?
Because a player has already been there. Valheim writes a zone into the world file the first time somebody comes within roughly 500 metres and never regenerates it, so northern ground explored before 1.0 keeps the terrain it had then.
Do I have to start a new world for the Deep North?
Only if your group explored most of the northern edge. Any world with unvisited ground in the far north generates the real biome the first time someone sails into it.
Can I force the Deep North to generate in an explored area?
With a world-editing mod such as Upgrade World, whose zones_reset command marks zones ungenerated so they roll again on the next visit. It destroys everything in those zones, including anything built there, and it needs a build compatible with the current game version.
