The Killd Board / Villagers

How many villagers does it take to crash a Minecraft server?

Server died#3 of 12 on the board

2,780. That is where the tick rate first fell behind on our test server, third-lowest on the board behind ender dragons and wardens. It died at 11,630. If you run a trading hall, this is the entity on this list you are most likely to actually have thousands of.

Why villagers cost so much

Villagers run the most complicated brain in vanilla Minecraft. Each one holds a schedule, a set of memories, a gossip list about players, a profession, a workstation it wants to path to, and a bed it wants to reach at night. All of that is evaluated as behaviours every tick. Add breeding checks and restocking on top and a single villager costs several times what a zombie costs. Trading halls hit this in the real world, which is why a village that ran fine at eighty villagers starts stuttering at three hundred.

How we tested it

Everything spawned into a single chunk, in one pile, with the server left running until the tick rate gave up. The server ran Paper 1.21.11 on an AMD Ryzen 7 9700X with 6GB allocated, which is the same hardware and the same RAM policy as an ordinary Hostd plan. We watched TPS and tick times rather than guessing, wrote down the count where the server first fell behind, and kept spawning until it either died or made it clear it was not going to.

This is the one from the series that bites real servers. If your trading hall has grown without anyone counting, cap the breeder and cull the surplus before you go looking for a bigger plan.

What this means for your server

If your own server is printing Can't keep up! Is the server overloaded? the cause is the same shape as this one: something in the tick loop is taking longer than its 50ms budget. Roastd reads your RAM allocation, view distance, player slots, JVM flags and logs and names which of those it is. No account, no world upload, no charge.

Questions about villagers

Do villagers cause lag in Minecraft?

Yes, more than almost any other passive mob. Each villager runs a full behaviour brain: schedule, memories, gossip, profession, workstation pathing and sleep. A few dozen is nothing. Several hundred in one place, which is what a mature trading hall looks like, is a measurable tick cost, and at 2,780 only the two bosses have broken our server with fewer.

How many villagers is too many for a Minecraft server?

There is no single number, because it depends on your CPU and what else is loaded. As a working rule, keep a trading hall in the low hundreds and cap the breeder rather than leaving it running. If you already have more than that and the lag follows you to the village, that is your answer.
